BAZA Space, Sofia

Interactive Performance Laboratory

A five-day laboratory exploring movement, perception, technology, sound, and bioreactive visuals through an interactive performance system.
During this lab, Nora Gibson will work with the group to co-create a resonant system — an interactive playground that fosters awareness of one’s own body and other bodies in space.
The system uses cameras and sensors to transmit movement and physiological data in real time. Depth cameras, skeletal tracking, movement sensors, and EEG data are connected to TouchDesigner and VCV Rack, where they become material for bioreactive visuals and sound.
At the center of the lab is a question: how do our composition and movement choices change when our choices become externalized — through sound, image, or other real-time feedback?

A resonant system is a feedback loop of perception between one’s own body and other bodies. These feedback loops already exist in improvisation, but here they become more tangible through technology. The invisible becomes something we can see, hear, and respond to.
Over five days, participants will playtest the system, learn how to work within it, and develop their own attuned way of interacting with the interactive space. The process will be shared in a final showing.
The lab can be explored by people with any physical ability and with advanced or no expertise in dance. All that is needed is the desire to play and the curiosity to listen to yourself and others in the space.
If there is interest, Nora can also share how the system is networked, including how data is normalized and organized within the programming.

Who is it for?

For dancers, performers, and movers who are technology-curious. Please note that this lab is for a bit more advanced mover, someone who is familiar with dance improvisation and instant composition and is curious about bioreactive visuals, sound, and real-time composition.
If you are a tech person, interested in this way of working, make sure you come to the Public Showing on June 27th.
