Useless Cabaret is a lab for creating small, neat, useful solo numbers in styles and genres we are not experts in.

Silvia Cherneva invites participants to explore what happens when we work outside of virtuosity. Do we have to do something very complicated for it to be meaningful? How can we get to the heart of a question or feeling, find a form that fits it, and perform it convincingly?
The lab asks whether a compelling performance can be rooted in something other than highly polished technique — or whether the technique we already have can be applied beyond the form in which we know it.
Can we take pleasure in being beginners again, without shame, and let that enrich everything else we do?
Artists from dance, theatre, circus, other forms of live performance, and other creative genres are welcome.
Space is limited.

With
Silvia ChernevaChoreographerSilvia Cherneva works across dance, performance and film. In 2016, she completed a Bachelor of Architecture at the University of Cambridge, UK and in 2020, a Master of Contemporary Dance at London Contemporary Dance School. She lives in Bulgaria and has co-organized variety of projects: “Focus Cinema Dance” of the “Man with a Hat” Foundation, PIK – Platform for Improvisation and Composition, DOM – Interactive Dance Performance of DigiPhysics. Together with Tsveta Doycheva, they founded the Room Temperature Association, with which they worked on the cultural program of the Hod Movement Laboratory, as well as on various creative projects in the performing and screen arts.
She is interested in the poetics of everyday movement, the politics of public space, and play as a way to create and connect. Her performative work lies at the intersection of space and movement, often using bold physical constructions to develop material based on play and experimentation. She explores filmmaking as a way to uncover the ‘dance’ in everyday situations and documentary stories, her short films having been screened at film festivals across Europe and the USA.
